Posting on Instagram is not a strategy. Here is how to think about digital marketing as a system.

Most Nigerian businesses know they need to be online. Many are posting on social media and wondering why it is not translating into sales. The problem is not effort — it is strategy.

Digital marketing is not about being everywhere. It is about being where your customers are, with a message that matters to them, and a path from discovery to purchase that works.

For most Nigerian SMEs, that channel is WhatsApp and Instagram. Not because they are trendy, but because that is where the customers are.

Measure what matters. Likes are vanity. Inquiries are better. Actual sales are what count. Set up a simple system to track where customers come from.

At CEA, we teach digital marketing as a practical skill tied to real business outcomes.

Start by defining the funnel for your specific business, because the path from stranger to customer differs wildly between a restaurant in Yaba and a B2B software vendor. For most consumer businesses: discovery happens on Instagram, TikTok or Google search; consideration happens on your WhatsApp Business catalogue and Instagram grid; purchase happens in DMs, on WhatsApp, or at your physical location; retention happens through broadcast lists and repeat-purchase offers. Map where prospects drop off today — most businesses discover they have plenty of attention but no system for converting it.

Content that works here shares a few traits. It shows the product in use rather than describing it — videos of food being prepared, fabrics being draped, dashboards being used. It uses prices openly; Nigerian buyers have been burned too often to enjoy 'DM for price' games, and hiding prices filters out serious buyers while inviting time-wasters. And it posts consistently on one or two channels rather than sporadically everywhere: an abandoned Instagram page actively damages trust.

Paid advertising deserves respect and small budgets. Start with ₦20,000 to ₦50,000 per month on Meta ads targeting your immediate geography, run three different creative angles against each other, and judge them on cost per inquiry — not likes. WhatsApp click-to-message ads are often the strongest performer for service businesses because they start conversations directly. Google Search ads suit businesses answering existing demand (plumbers, lawyers, schools during admission season); social suits demand creation. Never scale a campaign that has not shown you at least a rough sense of what an acquired customer costs versus what they are worth.

Email and SMS remain criminally underrated here. Every customer who buys from you should land on a list you own — not just your followers list, which platforms can throttle or delete. A monthly text about restocks or a short email newsletter costs almost nothing and routinely outperforms social media for repeat sales, because it reaches people without fighting an algorithm.

Finally, instrument everything lightly. Ask every new customer how they found you and write down the answer. Put different WhatsApp numbers or links per channel so you can count inquiries by source. Review monthly: which channel produced paying customers, what did each cost, and where should next month's effort concentrate? Marketing becomes manageable the moment you treat it as a series of experiments with numbers attached rather than a personality contest on the explore page.
